The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier announced that the Indian Premier League edition in 2022 will have two more franchises. But the BCCI Treasurer Arun Dhumal has now said that the board will have to see the market and also assess the situation prevailing in the country.
"We are looking to have two franchises in next year's IPL but we will have to see the market and also assess the situation prevailing in the country. We can't guarantee a timeline because there are a lot of things we have to consider," said Dhumal to IANS on Monday.
Though Ahmedabad is most likely to host one of the franchises but there would be a bidding process before the process gets underway. A mega auction is also being planned by the BCCI for next year.
The BCCI had earlier moved the remainder of IPL 2021 to UAE after the cash-rich league was suspended on May 4 due to a rise in COVID-19 cases within the franchises.
Sandeep Warrior, Varun Chakravarthy, Amit Mishra, Wriddhiman Saha, CSK batting coach Mike Hussey and bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji had tested positive for the disease.
The schedule for the IPL’s remaining matches hasn’t been announced but it is likely to take place from September 19 to October 15 while the World T20 that was also officially moved to the UAE on Monday from India is slated to begin on October 17.
