Late Bob Woolmer, South Africa born England cricketer and former coach of Pakistan and South Africa wanted Marnus Labuschagne, current Australian Test star to play for South Africa as early as when he was just four years old.
In a photo shared by veteran statistician Mohan Das Menon on his Twitter account, a young Labushagne can be seen standing alongside now South Africa legend Shaun Pollock. Menon captioned the picture as, “4-yr-old Marnus Labuschagne with Shaun Pollock before an ODI vs Australia at Bloemfontein on 13 April 1997. South African coach Bob Woolmer said: “We need to get you a contract young man” as Marnus stood by the nets.”
The statistician then poses a question in the next line of the caption, “And how South Africa might wish now that a deal was struck.” Labuschagne, 26, had travelled to Australia with his parents when he was 13 and then started playing for South Australia in domestic cricket. In the 8 Tests so far the Redbacks player has scored 1885 runs at an amazing average of 60.
Labuschagne is not the only South African to play for other countries, there is a long list and Devon Conway is the newest joiner, who made his debut for New Zealand in a T20I against West Indies.
