  • Bcci Looking To Add Extra Fast Bowler As Hardik Pandyas Cover In Indias T20 World Cup Squad

BCCI looking to add extra fast bowler as Hardik Pandya’s cover in India’s T20 World Cup squad

With the International Cricket Council allowing an extra week for Super 12 teams of the T20 World Cup 2021 to finalise their 15 man squad, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Senior Selection Committee is looking to add an extra fast bowling option in case Hardik Pandya is unable to bowl in the mega event.

Panday has not bowled in the entire IPL and hence the likes of Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur, two fast bowlers who can bat are being considered to be drafted into the last 15.

''Indian team is at least one fast bowler short in the main squad of 15. They have two experienced campaigners in Shardul Thakur, who is also a handy bowling all-rounder and Deepak Chahar, who has shown his batting prowess in Sri Lanka in the stand byes,” a senior BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.

'So in case, Hardik is not able to bowl, one of the two can be fitted in by the Committee,” the source added.

Earlier in the last match of the league stage for Mumbai Indians against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rohit Sharma said that he was not sure when would Hardik be bowling in terms of a timeline.

''In terms of his (Hardik) bowling, the physios, trainers are working. He hasn’t bowled a single ball yet. We wanted to take one match at a time and see where he stands,'' said the Mumbai skipper.

''He is getting better day by day. In the next week or so, he might be able to bowl, who knows? Only the doctors and physios will be able to give an update on that,'' the Indian vice-captain added, indicating that Hardik might yet be able to bowl.

Whether or not there is a change in the Indian team the fans would have to wait at least till October 15. Post the specified date of October 15, a change in the squad can only be on the basis of injury.

AUS W vs IND W | 3rd T20I: Indian Women succumb to run rate pressure as Australia take T20I series 2-0

India Women suffered yet another defeat to go down 2-0 in the three-match T20I series against Australia Women, and also lost the all-format series by a margin of 5-11. Tahlia McGrath, who was the lone ranger and hero from the last game for Australia, played yet another brilliant innings and supported Beth Mooney as the two helped Aussie get to a total, which was troublesome for the Indian women. Along with McGrath and Mooney, economical spells from Sophie Molineux and Annabel Sutherland also played their part in getting Indian batter bogged down and commit mistakes under the pressure of the required run rate. India, who were set a target of 150 to win in the match and draw the T20I series, got off to the worst possible start, losing Shafali Verma in the very first over. Smriti Mandhan and Jemimah Rodriguez then stitched a partnership to get things moving. But in an attempt to up the ante, Rodriguez was caught by Tayla Vlaeminck off the bowling of leg spinner Georgia Wareham. Smriti also got out after completing her fifty in the 15th over as the required rate pressure kept piling up. Soon, skipper Harmanpreet and Pooja Vastrakar, who was sent up the order, also went back to the pavilion. With Harleen Deol’s wicket on the first ball of the 18th over, women in blue lost four wi kets in a span of 10 runs and 14 balls, making the already difficult chase even more difficult. With 18th and 19th over resulting in a total of just 12 runs, India Women needed to get 35 off the last over to win the game. Though they couldn’t get 36, some brilliant shots from Richa Ghosh meant that the loss didn’t look that bad, as India remained only 14 short of the Aussie total. Earlier in the day, after winning the toss and deciding to field first, the Indian team did get the early breakthrough in the form of Alyssa Healy. But the Aussie thereafter kept building required partnerships to eventually end with 149-5 in their 20 overs. Tahlia McGrath was awarded both Player of the Match as well as Series. Having already lost the ODI series 2-1, which could have had a different outcome if the second match, which was decided on the last ball had a different outcome. In the Test match, India were once again the better team but had to settle with a draw due to rain. However, in T20Is, the difference between the two teams was stark. And even as the first game was washed out, the hosts won the remaining two.

World T20 2021 | ICC Acting CEO confirms Afghanistan's participation

Clearing the air on their participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup, ICC Action CEO Geoff Allardice on Sunday said that the Afghanistan cricket team are preparing as “normal” for the global event. Allardice echoed the status of Afghanistan in the ICC membership structure and said that being a full member, they are all set to play in the group stage of the tournament. "They are a full member at the ICC and the team is preparing for the event (World Cup) at the moment (and) will be playing in (the) Group league. In terms of their participation, it is proceeding as normal," Allardice said in a virtual conference call. There have been uncertainties surrounding the fate of the game in Afghanistan after the takeover by the Taliban. After forcing itself to power, the Taliban had sacked Hamid Shinwari from the post of CEO of Afghanistan Cricket Board and replaced him with Naseed Zadran Khan. Allardice maintained that the ICC has been in continuous communication with the ACB officials and that it is firm on its objective of supporting the development of the game in the country. "Yes, I think, when the change of regime took place in Afghanistan in August, we have been in regular contact with their cricket board, the Afghanistan Cricket Board and our primary function is to support the development of cricket in that country through the member board," Allardice said. ICC’s CEO statement more or less confirm Afghanistan’s participation in the T20 World Cup but at the same time, he refused to give clarity on the future of the country as ICC’s member nation. He said that the ICC board will consider the changes that have taken place or are likely to take place in the near future in the next round of meeting "We are waiting to see how things unfold under the different regimes in that country and we will do that through the cricket board. The ICC Board will consider it when they next meet, which is looking like at the end of the T20 World Cup,” Allardice concluded. After administrative changes in ACB and subsequent banning of Women’s game in the country, there were threats of isolation from other rich boards such as Cricket Australia. However, the ICC Acting CEO statement has put all those speculations to rest, albeit for the foreseeable future.
