Bangladesh to go with Nurul Hasan as primary wicket-keeping option in T20 World Cup

Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo confirmed that the team would be going into the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 with Nurul Hasan Sohan as the primary wicket-keeping option as the senior wicket-keeper batsman and former captain Mushfiqur Rahim has decided not to keep wickets in the shortest format.

"There has been a change. Initially, after speaking to Mushy [Mushfiqur Rahim], he was going to keep after the second game. But he told me he probably doesn't want to keep wickets in T20s anymore, so we have to move on," Domingo was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

"I don't think Mushfiqur's desire to keep in this format is great anymore. We have to focus on Sohan (Nurul) and possibly let him do those duties going into the competition,” the coach added.

At the start of the series, it was decided that Sohan would keep in the first two games while in the next three games, Rahim was to keep wickets. The arrangement was made in such a manner so that the management could decide whom to go to within the upcoming World Cup.

The Bangladesh time was thrashed by New Zealand in the third T20I by 52 runs as they folded for 76, their second-lowest T20I total. The South African coach of the Bangladesh team was however not really bothered by the single loss and said that his team was simply outplayed in all sections of a game.

"We were obviously outplayed by New Zealand today. I am disappointed but that's the nature of this format and full credit to New Zealand for being much smarter and better skilled than us today," Domingo said.

Domingo further suggested that there was no problem with the team’s approach of going for runs early on instead of playing the waiting game. "I don't think there was a problem in approach in batting. We want to try to stay ahead of the run rate. Once you are behind, it gets difficult to catch up. We want to start positively. Unfortunately, we lost a few early wickets, and then we lost wickets in clusters,” he said.

The two teams will now face each other in the fourth T20I at the Sher-E-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka.

Ravi Shastri, Bharat Arun, R Sridhar test Covid-19 positive, to not take part in remainder of series

The coaching group of the Indian team has confirmed contraction to Covid-19 infection after the latest round of RT-PCR tests. Just hours after the Pakistan T20 World Cup Squad was announced, the team’s Head coach Misbah-Ul-Haq and Bowling coach Waqar Younis resigned from their posts citing an inability to continue at the post after two years of service. Both Misbah and Waqar were appointed in September 2019 and still had a year each left in their contracts. To cover for those positions, Pakistan Cricket Board has appointed Saqlain Mushtaq and Abdul Razzaq as coaches for the interim measures. Announcing his resignation, Misbah said that the quarantine in Jamaica post the West Indies series provided him with an opportunity to reflect on the past 24 months as well as the schedule for international cricket ahead and that made him take the ultimate decision. He also acknowledged that the timing of his decision might not be right or ideal. “I would have had to continue to spend considerable time away from my family and that too in a bio-secure environment, I have decided to step down from the role. I understand that the timing may not be ideal but I don’t think I am in the right frame of mind for the upcoming challenges and it makes sense for someone fresh to step in and take the side forward,” Misbah was quoted as saying in the PCB press release. Waqar on his part said that there was no choice of him staying in the management after the head coach stepped down as they had signed up for the role together and worked together. “After Misbah shared with me his decision and future plans, it was a straightforward one for me to resign as we had walked into the roles together, had worked collectively as a pair and now also step down together,” said the former fast bowler for Pakistan. PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said that he was informed about the decision by the different coaches and he respects their decision as well. Further, he informed that both Razzaq and Mushtaq have been successful as coaches at the domestic level and hence they have been tasked with the responsibility. “Both Saqlain and Razzaq are ready to step up and are very much looking forward to making important contributions in their coaching roles against New Zealand,” he said.
