The Asian Cricket Council Asia Cup was established in 1983 and is scheduled to be held every two years, however, because of the pandemic. 

The Asia Cup 2022 marks its return after four long years and is all set to commence on August 27 this year, with the final of the tournament scheduled to be held on September 11. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will be hosting the tournament in the United Arab Emirates. The host Sri Lanka will face Afghanistan in the first match of the tournament.

 This time the tournament will take place in the T20 format with a total of 6 teams participating. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan are the 5 confirmed teams so far. However, Kuwait, UAE, Singapore, and Hong Kong will be playing a Qualifier for the 6th spot.

1. Lasith Malinga – The veteran Sri Lankan pacer, Malinga has played 15 Asia Cup matches in his career. 2. Muttiah Muralitharan – Another Sri Lankan bowler on this list, the spin wizard, Muralitharan in 24 matches of his Asia Cup career, he took 30 wickets with an economy of 3.75. Murli likewise has 1 five-wicket and 1 four-wicket haul in the Asia Cup. His best bowling figure is 5/31.

3. Ajantha Mendis – Sri Lanka’s one of the most successful limited-overs bowlers, Mendis has played fewer matches in the Asia Cup however has impressive figures. In the 8 matches, he grabbed 26 wickets with an economy of 3.98. Mendis also has 2 five wickets and 2 four wicket hauls in Asia Cup, and his best bowling figure is 6/13.


4. Saeed Ajmal – One of Pakistan’s best off-spinners, Ajmal has played 12 Asia Cup matches in his career and is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament by picking up 25 wickets with an economy of 4.21. Ajmal’s best bowling figure in the tournament is 3/26.

5. Shakib Al Hasan – The former Bangladesh captain and one of the finest all-rounders in cricket, Shakib has played 18 Asia Cup matches. The left-arm orthodox bowler has grabbed 24 wickets in the tournament with an economy of 5.05. His best bowling figure is 4/42.


With three veteran Lankans ruling the chart, it will be interesting to watch out for bowlers of this era who are all set to play this edition of the Asia Cup after a long gap.
