The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has confirmed that the 2022 Asia Cup will be held in Sri Lanka. The tournament will run from August 27 to September 11, while the qualifiers are scheduled to start a week earlier on August 20.
As Asia Cup 2022 is slated just before the World Cup this year, it has been decided the tournament will be played in the T20 format. India will enter the competition as the defending champions as they won the 2018 Asia Cup, beating Bangladesh in the final.
"The Asia Cup 2022 (T20 Format) will be held in Sri Lanka from 27 August - to 11 September later this year. The Qualifiers for the same will be played 20 August 2022 onwards," ACC declared in their recent post on Twitter.
Meanwhile, the ACC members unanimously decided that Jay Shah will continue as the ACC president and that of the Executive Board with its committees till 2024.
"AGM Update: The ACC Members unanimously decided that the tenure of Mr. Jay Shah as ACC President and that of the Executive Board along with its Committees will continue until the 2024 AGM," the thread read further.
India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan will lock horns in the six-sided affair. Qualifiers featuring UAE, Hong Kong, Kuwait, and Singapore will decide the sixth team to participate in the tournament.
Earlier, the tournament was slated to be held in Sri Lanka, back in 2020, before COVID-19 pandemic hit the brakes on proceedings. The multilateral event was then moved to 2021 and then in the year 2022.
Pakistan, which had the hosting rights for the year 2022, will now hold the event in 2023.
