Stuart Broad has backed his teammate James Anderson’s verdict over Edgbaston pitch used for the first Ashes Test last week. The match in contention witnessed a final hour finish, with Australia prevailing by two wickets during the final few minutes of the contest.

After England’s defeat, senior pacer Anderson had claimed the pitch rolled out in Birmingham’s Edgbaston was a lifeless one, with no pace, bounce, or swing on offer for the bowlers.

Broad says Birmingham conditions did not suit Anderson

Stuart Broad collected six wickets in the match, including three during the high-octane Australian run-chase. Meanwhile, his senior teammate Anderson only struck once in the entire Test.

Broad, in his column for The Telegraph, claimed that the Birmingham pitch provided no assistance to the seamers. He also praised Anderson and predicted that the speed veteran will make a big impact in the remaining matches of the series.

“Not to make excuses for James Anderson, but there was no swing and no seam, so conditions didn’t suit him in Birmingham and we all know his quality. He is a class act and we know Jimmy will have a big impact in this series.”

The seasoned speedster also stated that England came close to winning the first Test, and the team will play their attacking cricket even more in the remaining matches.

“We came so close to taking a 1-0 Ashes lead in Birmingham, but head to Lord’s trailing Australia. So, what do we need to do differently this week? Attack even more.”

Notably, both Anderson and Broad are on the cusp of achieving major landmarks in Test cricket. The two speed demons are approaching 700 and 600 Test wickets respectively, and will likely reach their landmark figures in the coming weeks.
