  • Alec Stewart Defends County Cricket Says Weve Still Got Good Players In The Championship

Alec Stewart defends County cricket, says, 'We've still got good players in the championship.'

Among the several reasons that are getting mentioned by the cricket pundits for the ongoing poor string of performance by the England test team, a prominent one is the inability of England's County championship to produce quality players. But the former English Captain Alex Stewart has defended the English domestic tournament by saying that they still produce good players and the County teams are trained by good coaches.

"We've still got good players in the championship; you've got excellent coaches. When they go up, it's a massive jump and it's a massive jump in all domestic cricket around the world", Stewart said.

However, Stewart, who played 133 test matches for England, has also stated some reasons responsible for the continuously increasing gap between the returns of the English players in domestics and those in internationals. According to him, most of the English international players don't play in the County Championship when they aren't committed to representing England, which averts the domestic players to play against the likes of Joe Root or James Anderson.

Further, he mentioned the dissolution of Kolpak as a prime cause behind England's County circuit lacking good overseas players, which is another factor responsible for the decrease in the quality of the competition. Finally, the legendary former keeper-batter termed the packed test schedule and the desire of players to play t20 leagues as the root cause of these problems.

"The gulf between the championship and test cricket has gotten bigger", Stewart said. "Test players used to play county cricket. County players would be bowling to Graham Gooch or Mike Gatting or facing high-quality overseas bowlers. The quality of overseas players has diminished", Surrey's director further added.

Stewart believes that if the player picked is good for one game, then he is also good enough for 5-6 more games. Therefore, he feels that the real issue lies in the selection process, and therefore, the selectors have to be spot on while making their choices.

"I always believe that if you've been picked to be good enough for one game then you should be picked and be good enough for a number of games, because if you're not, then it's not the lad's fault it's the selector's fault", the ex-England captain said.

On the other hand, Surrey's head coach Gareth Batty cited the lack of senior players in the England XI as the reason behind such woeful performances. However, he stressed that the quality of young players has nothing to do with this regard.

"There are less senior players in the England XI at the minute. So young players are going in and having to fend off like a senior player. That's why it's not working. It isn't the quality of the young player", Batty said.

To note, England have managed to win just one test in their last 17 games, which signifies their poor run in the longest format in this period.

IPL 2022 | 'Very good bowling from their seamers' - Faf praises KKR after the win

RCB vs KKR match in Mumbai on Wednesday (March 30) turned out to be a nail-biter as RCB won the game in the final despite restricting the opponent to a below-par - 128. Wanindu Hasaranga was the one who dismantled KKR's batting lineup by taking four wickets, got support from Akash Deep and Harshal Patel, picking up three and two wickets, respectively. After the win, Wanindu Hasaranga, who won the Man of the Match award, said: "Crucial situation, I got only four and got out. I am delighted. Especially with the dew, it is tough to bowl. My favourite footballer is Neymar, and that is his celebration which I do. When I go play, I don't take any pressure. That's why I feel I got success." While chasing, RCB had a shaky start. They lost three of their key batters inside the powerplay. And, with a below-par total in hand, KKR bowlers also put up an exceptional performance. They maintained the pressure very well and took the game to the final over. However, Dinesh Karthik and Harshal Patel kept their calm and took the team to the finish line with 4 balls to spare. After the win, Faf du Plessis said: "Very happy. Small margins games are crucial at the start. We just tried to be positive, but excellent bowling from their seamers. There was seam and bounce, and KKR bowlers utilised it well. Two-three days ago, it was 200, and today it was 130. We want to be more convincing. Just the experience. The runs were never a problem. We just needed to have wickets in hand. DK is as close as it gets to MS Dhoni when it comes to being ice cool. I rely on other people for help. We have great people in the camp. There is good communication in the group. The guys have been great. They have been supportive. They are coming to me with ideas." After losing, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer said, "I found this game exciting. Before getting in, I spoke with my boys and told them that this game would define our character and attitude on the field no matter we defended or not. The way we fight it on the ground will reflect our mentality in the next few games. I am proud of how we played this game and took it to the last over. It was tough at that moment because I wanted to get my best bowlers up there and get a few wickets early on, but it didn't work out well. However, kudos to their batters; they played really well out in the middle. They took out the most challenging phase as soon as possible. In the end, I decided to go with Venky because he's got really good experience bowling at the international level, and you need to back them, especially at the start of the tournament. They must gain confidence as early as possible, and this was one of the best games to get that." Iyer concluded.
