BBL 2021-22: Adelaide Strikers register Knockout berth, beat Hobart Hurricanes in Eliminator

Adelaide Strikers made a place for themselves in the knockout of the BBL 2021-22 after beating Hobart Hurricanes in the Eliminator match by 22 runs in Melbourne on Friday. The Strikers rode on a riveting bowling performance especially from Peter Siddle who bagged four wickets for 32 runs in 3.4 overs as the Hurricanes were bundled out for 166 while chasing 189 in 20 overs. The Hobart side didn't really have a great start to the proceedings and they lost wickets at regular intervals to get reduced to 67/3 in the 10th over. But D Arcy Short then took the onus on himself and held the fort at one end as he notched up a 34-ball 56. But Short's departure pushed the Hurricanes on the back foot once again as they lost wickets at regular intervals to eventually get bowled out. Earlier, in the day, openers Alex Carey and Matthew Short provided the side with a brilliant stand of 145 runs for the first wicket. While Carey scored 67 in 45 balls, Short smashed 89 in 48 deliveries. But Adelaide then lost a few wickets after the departure of both the openers and were restricted to 188/6 in 20 overs.

South Africa's Tabraiz Shamsi got the side back in the hunt against India in the second ODI of the three-match series in Paarl. The Indian team rode on an exceptional stand of 115 runs for the third wicket between stand-in skipper KL Rahul and wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant to get the side back on track after losing Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli in quick successions. KL and Pant then steadied the ship and notched up individual fifties during the course. Rahul was undone by Magala after being caught by Van der Dussen while Pant was sent back to the pavilion by Shamsi for a 71-ball 85. The left-handed batsman was caught in the deep by Markram. Later, Shreyas was trapped in front of the stumps by Shamsi for 11.

Harbhajan Singh tests positive for Covid-19

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has tested positive for Covid-19. "I've tested positive for COVID with mild symptoms. I have quarantined myself at home and taking all the necessary precautions. I would request those who came in contact with me to get themselves tested at the earliest. Please be safe and take care," the right-arm bowler said in a tweet. Harbhajan had earlier hung his boots from all forms of cricket. "There comes a time in life, you have to take tough decisions and you have to move on. From the past year, I wanted to make an announcement, and I was waiting for the right time to share the moment with all of you. Today, I am taking retirement from all formats of cricket," he said in a statement. The off-spinner was a part of the Indian team that lifted the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the 50-over World Cup in 2011 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni and had scalped a Test hattrick for India against Australia.

India were pushed on the back foot with a couple of quick wickets in the second ODI against South Africa in Paarl after the introduction of spin bowling. The openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan had begun the proceedings in a steady manner as India batted first. But the run flow was halted as Dhawan was sent back in the hut for 29 off 38 after he was caught by Magala off Aiden Markram. The visitors then suffered another blow with the departure of Virat Kohli who got out for a five-ball duck leaving India at 64/2 in the 13th over. Kohli was caught in the covers by Bavuma off Keshav Maharaj. India are presently trailing the three-match series 0-1 after they were defeated in the first match and loss in this encounter will give the Proteas an unassailable lead.
