The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024 is nearing its end, and the penultimate clash promises an interesting showdown. Melbourne Stars Women (MS-W) and Adelaide Strikers Women (AS-W) will face off at Junction Oval, Melbourne, on Sunday, November 24. Both teams are out of the title race, but this game isn’t just a dead rubber, it’s a scrap to dodge the wooden spoon.

Melbourne Stars Women

It’s been a tough season for Melbourne Stars Women. They’ve only managed two wins from nine games and are stuck at the bottom of the table. Their last game against Brisbane Heat Women was a rain-hit mess, with the Stars scoring just 46/6 in seven overs. The batting lineup crumbled like a house of cards with Annabel Sutherland, Meg Lanning, Marizanne Kapp, Deepti Sharma, and Sophie Reid all falling for single-digit scores.

Tess Flintoff’s unbeaten 14 and Rhys McKenna’s 15 were the only bright spots. With the ball, the Stars weren’t much better. Kapp, Kim Garth, and Sophie Day bowled economically but failed to take wickets, while Sutherland got one but went for plenty. They’ll need to pull up their socks and bring their A-game if they want to finish on a high.

Adelaide Strikers Women

On the other hand, Adelaide Strikers Women aren’t much better off, sitting just above the Stars with three wins from nine games. However, their last outing against Perth Scorchers Women gave them something to cheer about. Smriti Mandhana and Katie Mack both scored 41, while Laura Wolvaardt smashed a classy 48 to post 169/6.

With the ball, Megan Schutt was the star, grabbing three wickets, while Anesu Mushangwe and Orla Prendergast chipped in with two each to seal a 30-run win. The defending champs haven’t had the season they hoped for, but they’ll be keen to finish strong and steer clear of the bottom spot.

How Will the Junction Oval Pitch Behave?

The Junction Oval is known for its batting-friendly track, with good pace and bounce early on. However, as the game progresses, spinners tend to come into play. Teams batting first have had better luck this season, so the toss-winning skipper might want to put runs on the board. A score of 170 or more could be on the cards if the batters get going.
