Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) consigned Mumbai Indians to an 18-run defeat in front of a near-capacity Eden Gardens crowd in match number 60 of the IPL 2024 season on May 11. The outcome also marked KKR’s fourth win in succession, and helped them secure a spot at the playoffs.

After the match, a seemingly satisfied KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer claimed that he had “manifested” his team’s emphatic victory, and hailed his troops for putting up yet another clinical all-round effort despite losing the toss.

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer hailed his colleagues for coming up with match-defining performances during the fag end of the league stage.

Acknowledging KKR’s fourth successive win of the season, the 29-year-old said that his team has been playing some “fantastic cricket” off late, and praised them for bouncing back against Mumbai Indians despite losing both openers early after losing the toss in a rain-curtailed game. He said:

“I manifested before the game we will qualify. Nerves were there. We've been playing fantastic cricket throughout. Boys are taking a lot of responsibility. There have been many game changers and today is a true example. Kudos to the team. We definitely lost the toss but whichever team plays the best has a great time to win. We were confident we can win from any situation. To bounce back after the powerplay in the 1st innings, it was a tremendous effort from each and every player and that's what I love to see.”

Shreyas Iyer also explained his decision behind giving four overs to Varun Chakravarthy, and for going with an expensive Harshit Rana for the final over of the match. He added:

“It’s not about who is the best. On the particular day which bowler is bowling at a great pace and great form. I backed my instincts. Varun was phenomenal with his line and lengths. Yesterday facing him in nets it was difficult to play his leg spin. My guts went with Varun and he did the job.”

Having already qualified for the IPL 2024 playoffs, Shreyas Iyer will now lead KKR against a struggling Gujarat Titans unit in match number 63 of the tournament. The much-awaited contest will be staged at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on May 13.
