They dub it the 'El Clasico' for a reason. The rivalry between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), spanning just 16 years of existence, is laden with history, adding weight to every encounter between them. 

The most iconic matchup in the history of the cash-rich league will unfold for the 37th time on Sunday as MI hosts CSK at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, April 14. With all the ingredients for a gripping contest, the clash between MI and CSK promises excitement in Mumbai.

While MI and CSK boast the most successful records in IPL history with five titles each, MI holds a slight edge in their head-to-head encounters. 

Having faced off 36 times in the IPL, Mumbai leads with a 20-16 record against Chennai. In the previous IPL season, CSK secured victories over their rivals twice on their way to clinching their fifth IPL title.

The rivalry between these two teams has produced several memorable encounters in the IPL. As they prepare for their 37th showdown in the IPL, let's take a look back at their last meeting on the field.


When CSK Faced MI in IPL 2023

Mumbai posted a below-par total of 139 for 8 after being asked to bat first. The then MI kipper Rohit Sharma's failure to score for the second consecutive game added to their woes, with Nehal Wadhera's 64 off 51 deliveries being the lone bright spot. Suryakumar Yadav contributed 26 runs off 22 balls as the second-highest scorer.

CSK's bowlers, including Matheesha Pathirana (3/15), Deepak Chahar (2/18) and Tushar Deshpande (2/26) were instrumental in restricting MI's total. 

In response, CSK chased down the target in 17.4 overs, with Ruturaj Gaikwad (30) and Devon Conway (44) leading the charge and Shivam Dube providing finishing touches.

The outcome of the match was largely determined during MI's innings, where their batting performance fell short, leaving them with the challenge of defending a modest total. 

Despite their efforts, MI failed to secure early breakthroughs, which would have given them a chance to turn the tide of the match.
