Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians at Mumbai's home ground, Wankhede, through exceptional team effort and brilliant captaincy. Gaikwad led from the front with a remarkable fifty and continued to shine as captain on the field, making precise decisions that helped them defend successfully in Wankhede, a ground where defending under lights is challenging.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to let CSK bat first. However, contrary to expectations, it was not Ruturaj Gaikwad who opened the innings for CSK. It was Ajinkya Rahane who partnered with Rachin Ravindra at Wankhede.

Why did Ruturaj demote himself Vs MI?

Some viewed it as a tactical decision, considering Rahane's track record on the Wankhede track, which is his home ground where he led the Mumbai side to victory in the Ranji Trophy this season. Rahane had also scored 61 runs from 27 balls at this ground last year vs MI, further emphasizing his comfort on this pitch.

The decision obviously raised doubts, with many speculating that Gaikwad had demoted himself to gain confidence as he wasn't performing at his best.  However, Gaikwad clarified the reason behind this decision post-game.

"We just need to keep it simple and encourage everyone to be in a good headspace. Jinx (Ajinkya Rahane) was carrying a bit of a niggle and we thought it could help him to open and I am fine to play anywhere," Gaikwad told.

However, the strategy didn't pay off immediately as Rahane got out in the second over. Nonetheless, Gaikwad played a classy innings after coming in at number 3, forming a crucial partnership with Rachin Ravindra.
