The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise became the first team of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season to qualify for the playoffs through their 18-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) last week.

Moreover, KKR also secured a top-two finish for themselves following their rain-marred no-result against Gujarat Titans on May 13.

Currently occupying the top slot on the IPL 2024 points table, much of KKR’s success can be attributed to their captain and Team India batting stalwart Shreyas Iyer, who joined the group back in 2022 after parting ways with Delhi Capitals.

Apparently, as per senior sports anchor Vikrant Gupta, Shreyas was offered a lucrative retention sum from the Capitals to remain at the franchise. However, the cricketer, in his adamant state, joined the KKR ensemble instead owing to a captaincy turmoil with Rishabh Pant at the Capitals.

Shreyas Iyer left lucrative DC offer to join KKR

According to a recent statement made by sports anchor Vikrant Gupta, Shreyas Iyer left his seven-year association with Delhi Capitals in 2022 after rising star Rishabh Pant replaced him as captain in IPL 2021.

The senior sports anchor further revealed that Delhi Capitals also wanted to hold on to Shreyas, and even offered him first retention money prior to IPL 2022 mega auction. However, the senior Indian batter rejected the offer to take up a captaincy gig for KKR.

Under his leadership, the KKR franchise has put up one of their best seasonal performances in recent memory. After failing to qualify for the playoffs in successive years, the KKR stormed to a top-two finish in IPL 2024 by securing nine wins from its first 12 completed league fixtures.

The Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals, on the other hand, is on the verge of facing yet another group stage elimination. However, a win with a huge margin over LSG in their upcoming final league game might well land them a spot in the top four.
