'I was thinking of... ' Mark Wood Drizzles Insight on Dhoni's Sixes Against LSG

Mark Wood has taken an early lead in the race for the purple cap, which is awarded to the highest wicket-taker in IPL 2023. He has already taken eight wickets in just two matches and has been very impressive with his pace, accuracy, and ability to get the ball to move off the pitch.

Wood played a crucial role in Lucknow Super Giants' victory over Delhi Capitals by taking five wickets, which was his first five-for in IPL. He was also effective against Chennai Super Kings, despite a strong start from their openers.

During the Chennai Super Kings innings, Mark Wood only appeared to struggle in the final over when he faced MS Dhoni. While he did manage to get Dhoni out on the third ball, the previous two balls were hit for sixes by the 41-year-old CSK captain.

Despite being one of the world's fastest bowlers, Wood seemed to feel the nerves as Dhoni made him work hard. One of Wood's perfectly executed deliveries was hit by Dhoni for an 89-meter six, after he quickly got into position and used his strong wrists to pull the ball from outside off stump. Wood later admitted that he had bowled exactly as he and LSG captain KL Rahul had planned, but Dhoni still managed to get the better of him.

"I and KL were talking. We were trying to stay calm and trying to work out how to get him out. In my mind, I was not trying to be defensive. I was actually thinking of ways to stop him from scoring runs and get him out. Unfortunately, it cost me 12 runs. But, that second shot in particular was an amazing shot. I bowled it exactly where KL and I decided. Get a bouncer and get it wide so that he has to fetch it if he is to take it. For him to hit it that far was pretty incredible," said Wood in a post match conference.

This six came after Dhoni had got off the mark with a six over third man. The noise of the packed Chepauk crowd when the legendary cricketer made his way into the centre went up several notches.

"The noise when he came out to bat and then when he hit those two balls were definitely the loudest I have played in front of. It was eye-opening but it was a great experience to look back," added Wood.
