'It Was Unbelievable For Us...,' Hashmatullah Shahidi On Miraculous Maxwell

There are no words to describe what we have witnessed today. Glenn Maxwell played one of an all time great innings to take Australia to an unbelievable victory against Afghanistan in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The big show pulled off an astonishing run chase for Australia, scoring a remarkable unbeaten 201 off 128. The men in yellow were in all sorts of trouble as they were 91 for 7 chasing a formidable 292.

Maxwell, who came to bat at six, went on to do something which goes beyond human capabilities. The 35-year-old batted with exhaustion, one of his legs gone, a bad back and still managed to take out Australia from the jaws of defeat.

Afghanistan should be disappointed with this result, especially after the kind of position they were in. You will see nine out of the ten times a team winning after reducing the opposition to 91 for 7 while chasing almost 300.

Speaking in the post-match presentation, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahid expressed his disappointment and admitted that in no way they thought the game was going to end like this.

“Very disappointed. Cricket is a funny game. It was unbelievable for us. Yeah. We were in the game. Our bowlers started very well. The dropped catches hurt us at the end of the day. We missed those moments and Maxwell didn't stop after that,” Shahidi said.

Catches win matches and it was another day the famous old-saying stood tall. Mujeeb Ur Rahman dropped a dolly when Maxwell was on 33. Shahidi believed the dropped catches were the key moments and further acknowledged the kind of night Maxwell had.

“I think that catches were the key point. After that, he played really well. He had all the shots and he didn't give any chance. Our bowlers tried hard to come back but have to give credit to him,” Shahidi added.

With this win, Australia becomes the third team to qualify for the semi-finals. On the other side, Afghanistan are still alive in the race to the knockouts but their chances are very much dependent on the results of other matches. The Atalans will take on South Africa in their last league game of the World Cup in Ahmedabad on Friday, November 10th.
