Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad punched out a sizzling 108* off 60 balls against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match number 39 of the IPL 2024 season. Despite his superlative efforts with the bat, the defending champions went down to a six-wicket defeat at the hands of KL Rahul’s visiting troops in Chennai.

Apart from coping a demoralizing loss, Gaikwad also joined an ‘unwanted’ IPL company through the course of his knock.

Ruturaj Gaikwad joins Virat Kohli for THIS record

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unbeaten 108 against LSG in IPL 2024 marked the second century of his IPL career. The cricketer had pounded his maiden IPL ton back in October 2021 through his 101* against Rajasthan Royals at Abu Dhabi.

As it turned out, both of Gaikwad’s hundreds ended up in a losing cause for the CSK franchise. In doing so, the dashing right-handed opener joined the company of RCB legend Virat Kohli, current Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson and former Punjab Kings opener Hashim Amla to claim the unwanted record of scoring more than one IPL century in a losing cause.

On a brighter note, Ruturaj Gaikwad also became only the third cricketer in CSK history to score two centuries for the franchise after former players Murali Vijay and Shane Watson.

Gaikwad will now be seen leading his CSK troops in their subsequent IPL 2024 challenge against SRH on April 28. Under his leadership, the ‘Yellow Brigade’ has so far secured four wins from eight league fixtures to be placed at number five on the IPL 2024 points table.
