That's all for the coverage of this mouth-watering game. The stage is set for the grand finale of the Indian Premier League. CSK to take on KKR on Friday. So, do join us for the live coverage of that game, sharp at 6:30 PM. Till the next time, it's a ta-ta and a goodnight from me, Anurag Singh and my co-commentators, Anurag Dasgupta, Arjun Bhalla, Ninaad Dixit and Akshay Bhide.
Venkatesh Iyer is the man of the match!
"I am doing what I am asked of me, very happy with the performance of the team. There's no difference playing domestic cricket and IPL. I am extremely delighted that the (KKR) management has backed my skill and allowed me to play as I like. It's about added pressure here at the IPL, but if you can handle it, you are good.
I was wanting to stay in the moment and wanted to convert the bad balls into boundaries. Shubman is an amazing player but if I get the bad balls, I will make sure to hit the boundaries. There is one more game to go so I am focusing on it, not paying much heed to the other news (of him being one of the net bowlers for the Indian team for the T20 World cup)."
Eion Morgan: "We will dissect what happened in the last four overs. The openers gave us a great platform. The conditions were set perfectly for you. The duo was set in, the ball was getting on a little bit better than the first innings. And we are in the finals, we won. We are delighted. We wanted to swing things in our favour, in this phase, and confidence is riding high.
We are in the entertainment business and need to play some entertaining cricket. Six off 2 and you would say the odds are for the bowling side. But Tripathi has done it for us so many times.
The guys coming in feel free to express themselves. The backroom staff have created an excellent atmosphere for that to happen. With the squad we have, we had huge expectations.
Our coach Bazz saw Iyer and had tracked his progress. Iyer seems to be batting on a different wicket. Anything can happen in a final!"
Rahul Tripathi: "Really happy with the win and it feels great. It was a wonderful from Rabada and I knew I had to connect one and fortunately I did. The talk with Ferguson was pretty simple. I told him, if there's a run, we'll go for it. It was a bit difficult to bat on as the ball was keeping a bit low. We were positive all throughout and the result went our way."
Rishabh Pant | Losing Captain: I don't have any words to explain how I'm feeling right now. It's really hard but we have to accept the result as we can't do anything with it now.
They bowled well after the powerplay and we weren't able to rotate the strike in the middle overs. We will rectify these mistakes and come back stronger next year.
Delhi Capitals is all about thinking positively. We played good cricket throughout the season. We cared for each other and hopefully, we will come back stronger next season.
WOW!! What a game we have witnessed!! After being down and out for most parts of the game but some excellent bowling at the death pulled the game back for the Capitals but a six from the blade of Tripathi was enough to take them through to the finals.
And with this, we come to the conclusion of the 2nd Qualifier of the 2021 Indian Premier League. Kolkata Knight Riders rode on their openers start and chased down this below-par total of 136 with 3 wickets in hand and move into the Finals of this coveted tournament. The match was destined to get over by the 18th over but the pacers came back at the death and almost gave a scare at the death to KKR hopes of qualification.
The plan was simple for the Knight Riders openers, take a head start in the powerplay and Venkatesh Iyer, Shubman Gill executed it to perfection. Having excelled in the last few games at Sharjah, the openers were on point once again, giving an impressive start to the Men in Purple and Gold in the powerplay. They brought up a solid 50-run partnership in the powerplay itself and played sensible cricket against the spin twins, Ashwin and Axar. Both the openers played risk-free cricket and took the game away from the reach of the Capitals in the powerplay itself.
Venkatesh Iyer brought up a remarkable half-century of just 38 balls and was well-supported by the youngster, Gill. The 96-run stand was finally ruptured in the 13th over with Rabada providing the first breakthrough for the Capitals but it was all too little, too late. Nitish Rana walked in the middle but soon fell prey to a short ball from Nortje but the required run rate was too low to make any dent in KKR’s qualification chances. DC made a game out of nothing at the death and pulled it back from the fire. Ashwin was brilliant in his last over picking Shakib and Narine in two balls but just one length ball proved enough to take KKR into the finals.
19.5 R Ashwin to R Tripathi
6 BANG AND OUT OF THE PARK!!!!! They have pulled off a heist here at Sharjah. Wow, wow, wow, wow!!! Rahul Tripathi is the hero, he does it in a Dhoni style. KKR BEAT DC BY THREE WICKETS, WITH ONE TO REMAINING. HEARTBREAK FOR THE DELHI CAPITALS! KOLKATA WIN THIS QUALIFIER AND THEY ARE INTO THE FINAL OF IPL.
There are dramatic scenes here in Sharjah. DC players are moaning, they aren't able to control their emotions. KKR players, on the other hand, are running onto the field, they too aren't able to control their emotions. The men in Black and Golden are all over their hero- Rahul Tripathi - who's getting hugs from everywhere, left-right-and-centre!!! Another short ball that Tripathi climbs into it! The batter sits deep in his crease and absolutely clatters that one over long off for a maximum to send KKR to the final! What a game this has been! The Knight Riders made a mess of it but it is Rahul Tripathi who turns out to be a breath-giver for them.
IPL, again, will not have a new-winner. You need to feel for Pant, You need to feel for Shaw, You need to feel for Nortje, You need to feel for Avesh, You need to feel for Iyer, You need to feel for Ashwin, You need to feel for Axar, You need to feel for KG. But you also need to stand up and applaud the efforts of Venky Iyer, the efforts of Gill, the efforts of Narine, the efforts of Varun, the efforts of Shakib, and most importantly the efforts of RAHUL TRIPATHI!!! The table-toppers of IPL 2021 get knocked out of the tournament. As KKR makes into their third IPL final.
Kolkata will face off the Chennai's Yellove Army on the 15th in the Grand Final of this Incredible Premier League.
c A Patel b R Ashwin
19.4 R Ashwin to S Narine
W ASHWIN YOU BEAUTY!!!!!! Two in two and that's the 51st wicket of a left-hander for Ashwin in IPL. Tossed up at length around off, spinning away from Narine and the batter dances down the track, looking to go over long off. However, he gets nowhere close to the ball and skies it towards long off, where Axar completes the easiest of catches!
Sunil Narine walks out to bat. 6 runs required off 3 balls.
lbw R Ashwin
19.3 R Ashwin to Hasan
W WHAT A GAME THIS IS TURNING TO BE!!!! Trapped on the front leg!! Ashwin strikes! KKR lose another wicket and DC on fire at the moment. Tossed up delivery on the stumps. Shakib shuffles a bit too much as he tries to scoop this one on the leg side. He misses his connection and the ball raps him on the front pad. Loud appeal and the umpire gives it an out.. And that's the 50th wicket of a left-hander for Ashwin in IPL.
19.2 R Ashwin to Hasan
0 Shakib gets inside the line and looks to slog sweep this fuller corrom ball but edges it on the pads.
DG: That's a really good question, Ninaad. Has to be the biggest choke in the history if KKR lose this one..
Ninaad: Looks like I was right fellas, we are in the final over! How did KKR manage to do this!?
19.1 R Ashwin to R Tripathi
1 Ash comes in for the final one. Bowls a short and wide ball, almost a halftracker. Tripathi pulls it just one a single to cow corner. That could have been creamed out of the park.
R Aswhin to bowl the final over. Drama, drama everywhere. 7 needed off the last over.
