India player Deepak Chahar who played a vital role in the side's 3-wicket win against Sri Lanka in Colombo has said that CSK captain MS Dhoni has been his inspiration.
The right-handed batsman further added that the former India captain has told him that taking the match deep provides the team with some overs.
“(Dhoni) he has had a very big impact on me. Not just CSK, while growing up, we have all seen how he (takes the match close). Every time we speak, he tells me that it is in your hands to take the game till the end and if you can do that, then you get some overs and that makes the match thrilling.”
“So, that was the whole idea… to take the match till the last over,” Chahar said at a virtual press conference on the eve of the third ODI.
Chahar scored a career-best 69* off 82 against the Lankan lions to take India home.
The visitors were tottering at 193/7 while chasing 275 when Chahar along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar chipped in with an unbeaten stand of 84 runs for the eighth wicket and handed India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Earlier Suryakumar Yadav who was playing his second ODI for the team also notched up a half-century. The two teams will now face each other in the third and final ODI at the same venue.
