CPL 2020, Match 4, GAW vs St Kitts: Preview, Probable Playing XI and Prediction

Aug 19, 8:00:47 AM

The curtain-raiser between Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders supplied a rocket-fuelled headstart to the eighth edition of the CPL. West Indies' cricket's golden boy, Shimron Hetmyer, blasted an unbeaten 63 to help GAW post a meaty 145 after persistent drizzle reduced the game to 17 overs each. Though his efforts were to no avail as Sunil Narine fired on all cylinders, thumping fifty off 28 deliveries, as TKR cruised home with two balls to spare.

As expected, there were few blemishes in the field with straightforward chances going begging here and there. Conceding 11 extras cost the visitors dearly as the match went right down to the wire. Barring the tiny indiscretions, men from both quarters played out of their skin to deliver an enthralling game of cricket.

The cramped scheduling of the round-robin phase doesn't allow franchises the time to dwell on mistakes. Having suffered an early setback, GAW will eye return to winning ways as St Kitts meet them on the 19th August at Brain Lara Stadium, Trinidad.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

The cheap departure of openers Brandon King and Chanderpaul Hemraj left GAW yearning for momentum during the powerplay. Albeit, that lynchpins Hetmyer and Ross Taylor hit the ground running will keep their spirits high moving forward.

Their bowling attack sparkled intermittently but was guilty of lifting their foot off the opposition's throat at vital junctures in the context of the match. Imran Tahir leaking 40 off his quota of four overs didn't aid their cause either. Quicks Naveen-ul-Haq and Keemo Paul plied their trade miserly, but the rest should check upon their tendency to be profligate in operation.

Predicted XI:

Brandon King, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer, Ross Taylor, Nicholas Pooran(WK), Sherfane Rutherford, Keemo Paul, Chris Green(C), Romario Shepherd, Naveen-ul-Haq, Imran Tahir

St Kitts Nevis & Patriots

Following the double whammy of Chris Lynn and Evin Lewis' exit, Joshua de Silva and Ben Dunk held fort during their 154-run chase against Barbados Tridents, but couldn't see them over the line courtesy of Rashid Khan's timely intervention.

Apart from Alzarri Joseph and Ish Sodhi, who leaked runs as if spearheading a charity drive, the rest of the pack kept things tight. Skipper Riyad Emrit led from the front, capturing two wickets at an economy of four per over. Given the unforgiving nature of the slam-bang format, his brigade needs to tighten the screws, or else there might be even harsher lessons in store.

Predicted XI:

Chris Lynn, Evin Lewis, Joshua da Silva, Denesh Ramdin(WK), Ben Dunk, Jahmar Hamilton, Rayad Emrit(C), Sohail Tanvir, Ish Sodhi, Sheldon Cottrell, Alzarri Joseph

Match Prediction:

Having drawn first blood, Guyana Amazon Warriors no doubt have the upper hand over St Kitts Nevis & Patriots, who would be looking forward to opening their account.
