Henry Shipley Takes 5-fer As New Zealand Crush Woeful Sri Lanka in First ODI

Henry Shipley ripped through the Sri Lanka batting order as New Zealand outclass Sri Lanka by 198 runs in the First ODI of the three-match series at the Eden Park in Auckland. Sri Lanka got all-out for 76 in reply to New Zealand’s 274 and the hosts claimed a comprehensive win to take 1-0 lead.
Sturdy NZ posted an on-par total
After being asked to bat first, New Zealand posted an on-par total of 274 with the bat. In absence of Kane Williamson and Devon Conway, debutant Chad Bowes and Finn Allen opened the innings for the hosts. They got off to a good start, managing 54 runs on the board in the first ten overs with the loss of one wicket. Bowes, who made his debut, failed to fire in his very first outing in black.
Allen at the other end, had a comparatively longer stay, scoring his fourth ODI half century. He was well complimented by Will Young (26) and Daryl Mitchell (47) at the other end. The middle-order could not get going much longer as they usually do as Dasun Shanaka and his men managed to take breakthroughs at regular intervals.
However, Glenn Phillips and debutant Rachin Ravindra tried to stick together, stitching a partnership for the sixth wicket and were looking to launch for a big finish towards the end. Unfortunately, Phillips (39) was sent back in the 40th over, leaving Ravindra at the other end, who kept the scoreboard ticking with the tail.
He fell one run short of a maiden half century on his ODI debut and the Lankans got rid of the remaining tailenders quickly, bowling them out for 274. Chamika Karunaratne was the pick of the bowlers as he took four wickets off his nine overs, doing the major damage while bowling in the middle overs.

Chasing an on-par 275, Sri Lanka had an embarrassing outing with the bat as they were completely ripped apart by the Kiwi bowlers. The Sri Lankan innings never got going as Matt Henry and Henry Shipley made them look clueless against the new ball. They were five down at the end of the powerplay with only 31 on the board.
Henry could not get any wicket but bowled beautifully to sustain the pressure. Shipley on the other hand did the majority of the damage, taking four of the first five wickets inside the powerplay. Angelo Mathews was the only batter from the top six batters to get into double figures.
Eventually, the visitors were wrapped up for just 76, making a new record of lowest score against New Zealand. Henry Shipley was easily the pick of the bowlers as he finished with a career best 5 for 31. Daryl Mitchell and Blair Tickner finished with a couple of wickets each.
