The Peshawar Zalmi side stunned in-form Islamabad United with a 13-run win in a nail-biter at Rawalpindi. Mohammad Haris and Khurram Shahzad were the stars of the show for Zalmi, as Tom Kohler-Cadmore and co. snap their two-match losing streak this PSL 2023 season.

Haris, Rajapaksa guide Zalmi to huge total

Peshawar Zalmi lost opener Saim Ayub for a duck within the opening over of the match after being put to bat first. Thereafter, his opening partner Mohammad Haris launched a counter attacking assault with number three Bhanuka Rajapaksa. The Sri Lankan import himself cracked 41 while Haris top-scored in the innings with his six-laden 79 off just 39 deliveries.

Runs dried up in the death but collective contributions from the lower order eventually dragged the Peshawar Zalmi to 179 from their allotted overs. United’s Hasan Ali inflicted the most damage with the ball, snaring three wickets off his four-over spell.

United fall just short despite Ashraf’s blitzkrieg

Much like the Zalmi, the Islamabad United also lost opener Hassan Nawaz for a duck in the opening over. However, their subsequent three batters, Alex Hales, Sohaib Maqsood and Colin Munro all fell for 15 each as the United succumbed to 32-3 within the powerplay.

Wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz provided some stability with his 33, before three wickets at the same score reduced them to 111-8, still 69 runs away from their target.

Faheem Ashraf ignited some late fire to the contest with his lower-order rebellion, as he struck four sixes and two boundaries off his 13-ball stay at the crease. However, his dismissal in the final over brought curtains to United’s last hope, as they fell 13 runs short of their task.

Zalmi pacer Khurram Shahzad collected two wickets off the final over, including that of Ashraf, to finish his spell with a three-fer. Sufiyan Muqeem also claimed three wickets in the match, albeit in an expensive spell.

Brief scores:

Peshawar Zalmi: 179-8 (20)
