Dean Elgar is still going to play a huge part in South Africa's leadership group: Shukri Conrad

Rejig was in-line after Cricket South Africa (CSA) appointed new red and white-ball coaches for the men's national cricket team. Incoming Test head coach Shukri Conrad, who will work in alliance with new skipper Temba Bavuma, said that outgoing captain Dean Elgar still has a lot to offer.

Last week, Bavuma stepped down as T20I skipper and was named The Proteas red-ball leader, which left several questions about Elgar's place. Bavuma is already South Africa's ODI skipper, and will work alongside new coach Rob Walter.

As per thesouthafrican, Conrad maintained that Elgar had done a terrific job, but it was time for South Africa to move forward.

The 32-year-old led South Africa in 17 Tests, won nine, lost seven, and drew one between 2017 and 2023.

Here's what Conrad said

“Dean’s done an exceptional job over the last couple of years, and in my conversation with him that’s something I made clear. But this was my decision. I felt Temba and I were a good fit, and Dean’s still going to play a huge part in our leadership group.

This doesn’t make Dean a poor captain and Temba a good captain. But I felt this was the right fit for me and for us going forward,”

Bavuma and Conrad's first assignment together will be against the West Indies at home in a two-Test series starting February 28.
