In a significant development, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have set the record for the highest opening stand for India in ODIs against New Zealand.

The duo added a mammoth 212-run stand for the first wicket, eclipsing the 201*-run tally of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir to attain the milestone.

Highest opening stand for India vs New Zealand in ODIs

  • Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill - 212
  • Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag - 201*
  • Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar - 182
  • Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar - 169
  • Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma - 154

Since Gill has joined Rohit at the top, the two have been absolutely ruthless against every opposition. The dynamic batters smashed Sri Lanka for fun and have toyed with the New Zealand bowling lineup in this series.

Opening the batting, the duo capitalised on the favourable batting conditions to perfection. On Indore's flat pitch, Rohit and Gill took all Kiwi bowlers to the cleaners, establishing the foundation for a massive total for India.

While Rohit slammed 101 runs off just 85 balls with the help of nine fours and six sixes, Gill showcased the flamboyance of the highest order for his 78-ball 112, before being undone by Blair Tickner in the 28th over.

As of writing, India are 233 for 2, with Virat Kohli and Ishan Kishan batting in the middle.
