Hashim Amla retires from all forms of cricket

South African legendary cricketer Hashim Amla has decided to hang up his boots, after retiring from the international sport in 2019. 

At 39, Amla last played professional cricket for Surrey in 2022 during the County Championship Division One, signing a deal with the county post international retirement.


What Amla said on his retirement

"I have great memories of the Oval ground and to finally leave it as a player fills me with immense gratitude for what has been."

"A sincere thank you to Alec Stewart and the entire Surrey staff, players and Members for their support. The Surrey ship runs so professionally that it would make any international player feel a sense of honour just to be involved with."

Debutted in 2004, Amla over the years became a Proteas legend, becoming the fastest cricketer to 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 ODI runs. He also became the fastest cricketer to reach 10 ODI centuries. 

He last played for his national team during the 2019 World Cup, where he was hit on the helmet by India’s Jasprit Bumrah

Since his international retirement, he just played County cricket for Surrey, and and was an integral part of the side that won the County Championship in 2022.

Amla, who also represented Surrey as an overseas player in 2013 and 2014, retired from international cricket in August 2019 having amassed 18,672 runs across all three formats for the Proteas.
