On this day in 1998, India's master blaster Sachin Tendulkar brought his all-around performance to the fore as India defeated Pakistan comprehensively in the first final of the 1997-98 Silver Jubilee Independence Cup.

Tendulkar canes Pakistan with his three-for

Opting to bat first, Pakistan were clinical in the powerplay as their openers kept on ticking the scoreboard without losing any wicket.

However, Debasis Mohanty, Harvinder Singh and Sairaj Bahutule claimed a wicket apiece as India broke into Pakistan's middle-order.

The moment the partnership between Ijaz Ahmed and Inzamam-ul-Haq seemed to threaten, Tendulkar got rid of the former. Then, the leg-spinner ran down Inzamam and Manzoor Akhtar as he completed his three-for.

Eventually, Pakistan set India a target of 213 runs.

Tendulkar's 95 takes down Pakistan

A master of all trades, Tendulkar, now had his primary job to perform. The legend did not disappoint as his 95-run knock attained an eight-wicket victory for India.

Opening the batting with Sourav Ganguly, Tendulkar stitched a 159-run stand with his partner. In his 78-ball blitzkrieg, he tonked six fours and five sixes.

Although he was outdone by Shahid Afridi, the result was a foregone conclusion as Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja finished the match for India.
