Mickey Arthur refuses to return as Pakistan coach

Mickey Arthur has rejected an approach made by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to become the new men’s head coach of their national team. Earlier reports had predicted the South African to take up the role after the conclusion of Saqlain Mushtaq’s contract in February 2023.

The 54-year-old, however, is open to take up a consulting role or even a PSL coach but is not prepared to commit to a gruelling 12-month packed international calendar.

Mickey Arthur rebuffs second stint as Pakistan coach

As per the reports, the PCB had sent an informal offer to Mickey Arthur in December 2022, which was politely declined by the former cricketer. He had previously coached the ‘Men in Green’ between 2016 and 2019, during which he led them to a 2017 Champions Trophy win in England.

Arthur’s reluctance of returning to international fold was evidenced by his sudden move to Derbyshire in November 2021. He made a shift to the English club immediately after exiting from his coaching duties for the Sri Lankan team.

As of now, he is the head of cricket for Derbyshire and recently extended his contract with the club till 2025. His extension was gracefully welcomed by the club officials, who were left impressed by an encouraging first season of the team under his guidance.

Meanwhile, the PCB is fast-tracking their process of shaping up their coaching team following a dreadful home season against Australia, England and New Zealand.

The board has already seen a shift in managing committee, with Najam Sethi being appointed as its new head in place of departing Ramiz Raja.
