In the rapidly growing popularity of the T20 franchise cricket competition, the latest addition to this tally would be Cricket South Africa’s upcoming SA20 which is all set to kick start on January 10, 2023.

A total of six teams will participate in the tournament including - MI Cape Town, Durban Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

All these six teams are owned by the group that also owns franchises in the Indian Premier League. With the tournament still more than three months away, the former South Africa spinner Robin Peterson opened up on the things one can expect from SA20.

During an interaction with NDTV, here's what Robin Peterson, the general manager of MI Cape Town said on SA20:

"I think there is a lot of excitement around the new league. That is on everyone's lips, I definitely sense guys are trying to improve their skill level. That is why this league is going to be so amazing for South Africa,"

SA20 will be the second best T20-competition in the world: Peterson

Peterson feels that SA20 will help the development of cricket in South Africa. He also said that the players playing at the domestic level in the rainbow nation will look to elevate their overall performance to get a reward in the form of SA20 signings:

"I think domestic players have to raise their level of performance and there is a good reward when they do that. I think everybody is excited, not just from the players' point of view. Even people are excited about when the party comes to town. I think people have been starved of cricket,"

The former South Africa spinner also believes that SA20, as a competition, has everything in it that can make it the second-best franchise tournament after the Indian Premier League in world cricket.

"We have the facilities; we know how to run events in this country. We are definitely in a great position to be the second-best T20 competition in the world. Time is perfect, I really feel South Africa is in a great position to make the second-best league after the IPL.

"You only have to look at the people involved in this competition; every single big IPL franchise is involved here. That speaks volumes, it orders well for the future of the tournament. Give it 1-2 years, I think it is a no-brainer that this will be the second-best competition in the world. I think what will make this league standout is the talent."

The SA20 will have 33 matches with all the teams taking on each other twice with the top four qualifying for the semi-finals, followed by the summit clash between the two best teams of the tournament.
