Recently, there have been rumours that Cricket Australia has barred Cameron Green from participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the reason being the workload and chances of an injury.

Former Australian cricketer and cricket commentator Matthew Hayden has given a strong-worded opinion on the matter, saying that barring Green from participating in the IPL will be Cricket Australia’s loss. He has appealed to the cricket board to allow Green to play in the tournament if he is picked by any of the franchises.

In the recent series against India, Green opened the batting in T20I cricket for the very first time, and scored two fifties in three games. He finished the series with 118 runs from three games, striking at 214.55 and averaging nearly 40. His power-packed performances are likely to lead to offers from IPL franchises.

“He hasn’t been picked up in the IPL but I’ll tell you what, bowling all-rounders, they are gold dust. Gold dust. Especially if you can play like this, bang straight out of the middle,” Hayden said in commentary at the start of his innings in the third T20.

His partner in the commentary box, Sunil Gavaskar, then said that CA were unsure about allowing Green to play in the IPL, fearing workload. Replying to that, Hayden said,

“Well it’s nonsense if that’s the case because you’ve got to learn how to play the game. And you got to be playing it. You can’t play it in the nets, you play out in the middle under ground situation like this. Expose yourself to as many opportunities,

"We used to see it Sunny back in our day playing County Cricket, playing a volume of cricket to get the muscle memory to learn how to play in situations and different conditions.”

The batting all-rounder has so far played 14 Tests, 12 ODIs and 4 T20Is for Australia.
