Sri Lanka have done the unthinkable. By defeating Pakistan in the final of the Asia Cup 2022 by 23 runs, they will be taking the trophy home after a long wait of seven years. Sri Lanka’s redemption in the tournament has been nothing less than magical.

They started the competition with a brutal loss against Afghanistan, but there has been no looking back for Dasun Shanaka’s side since then.

Following the loss against Afghanistan, the island nation defeated Bangladesh to qualify. The Super Four saw an absolute carnage by Sri Lanka as they defeated Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan to reach the final showdown. The seamer, Chamika Karunaratne, seemed extremely happy with his team’s performance.

The 26-year-old hailed all the young guns for coming up with brilliant performances. The team didn’t have an ideal start in the final as they lost an important toss. However, it was coach Chris Silverwood who motivated the team to do wonders.

Karunaratne ecstatic with Sri Lanka’s win

Following the victory against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium, Karunaratne told Star Sports,

"It has been so good. When we came here we weren't the favorites. Tonight, we have done it. We are the winners. Happy to be here. It was a complete performance from us. Our youngsters were really good. They are coming up with the ranks. Our coach said not to worry about the toss. He asked us to be positive. Even after the first loss, the team didn't lose hope. Good comeback to win the next five matches. They pushed themselves to perform at their best."

Put to bat first in Dubai, Sri Lanka had a horrible start, as they were reduced to a score of 58 for five. However, it was the brilliance of Bhanuka Rajapaksa that steered the team to a total of 170 runs in their allotted 20 overs. The middle-order batter executed a masterclass in the middle by smashing 71 runs off just 45 runs.

The second innings saw a brilliant performance by Pramod Madushan and Wanindu Hasaranga as they picked four and three wickets, respectively. The bowling exploits by the two restricted Pakistan to a score of 147 runs, as Sri Lanka bagged the title to their name.
