Indian middle-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues has moved from the Melbourne Renegades to city-town rivals Melbourne Stars for the upcoming season of the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2022.

She becomes the first Indian player to represent the Stars, having made her WBBL debut last year, where she amassed 333 runs for the Renegades.

The Mumbai-born batter will join the Stars after finishing her international duties in the Women's Asia Cup 2022.

Rodrigues expressed her excitement about starting her association with Stars

"I am super excited to be a part of the Stars family. I've been told that I'm the first ever Indian to sign for the Stars and it is my honour to do so."

Blair Crouch, the general manager of the Stars, called Rodrigues' signing a landmark moment in the club's rich history.

"We have a huge following in India and to add a player of Jemimah's quality to our squad is huge coup for the club. I'm sure Jemimah will quickly become a fan favourite and we look forward to seeing her as part of the Stars Family in WBBL|08."

Rodrigues, 21, made her India debut in 2018 and has since played 58 T20Is and 21 ODIs, including three World Cups. She was recently ruled out of the Women's hundred due to an injury, after playing a few matches for the Northern Superchargers.

Stars Team Updates

Captained by Meg Lanning, the club consists of players like Sophie Day, Tess Flintoff, Annabel Sutherland and Kim Garth.

They open their WBBL 08 campaign against the Brisbane Heat on October 15.
