Asia Cup 2022 | Rohit Sharma's elite record broken by Afghan batter

Afghanistan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz cracked 84 from just 45 balls against an experienced Sri Lankan attack in Sharjah. The 20-year-old boosted his side’s total to 175-6 in their Asia Cup 2022 bout, one which was eventually chased down by the Lankan batters in the final over of the match.

Despite the defeat, Gurbaz’s knock earned him a special place in Asia Cup history books, as he dethroned Indian captain Rohit Sharma for an elite record.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz outdoes Sharma’s T20 Asia Cup batting record

Gurbaz’s 84-run blinder against Sri Lanka now marks the highest individual score for any batter in T20 Asia Cup history. Previously, Sharma had charted a match-winning 83 against Bangladesh in the 2016 edition of the tournament.

Bangladesh-based Sabbir Rahman’s innings of 80 against Sri Lanka in the same event comes at a close third in the elite list. Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan also scored an undefeated 78 against Hong Kong in the ongoing season, which serves as the fourth highest individual knock on the table.

Interestingly, not a single batsman from any of the Asian teams have managed to notch up a hundred in an Asia Cup match.

Asia Cup 2022 updates

The Asia Cup 2022 will now continue with match number two of the Super Four round on Sunday evening. Sharma’s drawcards will be taking on Pakistan at Dubai and the action is slated to commence from 7:30 PM IST onwards.
