The Melbourne Renegades have announced the signing of South African speedster Shabnim Ismail for the upcoming season of the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL). Ismail played for the Renegades in her debut season in 2016, before moving to the Sydney Thunder later in her career.

The 31-year-old has played 31 WBBL matches and claimed 27 wickets across three seasons.  Ismail was part of Thunder's title-winning season in 2020-21 and was player of the match in the final against Melbourne Stars.

Talking about her re-signing with Renegades, Ismail expressed her delight, and desire to win the competition and play under Sophie Molineux.

What Ismail had to say

“I started off there in 2016 and I’m happy to be coming back to the Renegades this year. I love the WBBL, it’s one of my favourite competitions to play in. Every team wants to play good cricket; everybody wants to get to the finals. Hopefully we can get over the line this year and win the Big Bash.”

Talking about Ismail, Renegades General Manager James Rosengarten said that she adds another dimension to a talent-rich squad already.

“We were looking to bolster our pace stocks and to be able to bring Shabnim back to the Renegades is a great outcome. Her ability to take wickets up front, bowl in pressure situations and be able to guide some of our younger players will be really beneficial for us."
