Trent Rockets mowed down Welsh Fire by 29 runs in their final group game of The Hundred 2022 competition.

Concluding their opening round campaign with six wins out of eight games, the Rockets have comfortably stormed into the playoffs. On the other hand, the Fire ended their winless crusade as season’s wooden-spooners.

The Hundred 2022: Dawid Malan hands Fire their eighth defeat of the season

Batting first, the Rockets piled up 172-4 off their 100 balls. England’s T20 batting maverick Dawid Malan top scored in the innings with his 37-ball 58 while his opening partner Alex Hales netted 38 runs while facing 29 deliveries.

Daniel Sams and Colin Munro served the finishing fury to the Fire at the death, profiting 53 runs combined off just 25 balls.

Apart from Matt Critchley’s 55*, none of the other Fire batters staged any rebellion in the run-chase. They eventually fell 29 runs short of the target, with Rockets bowlers Sam Cook, Samit Patel and Tabraiz Shamsi perpetrating most of the damage by taking two wickets each.

Brief scores:

Trent Rockets: 172-4 (100 balls)

Dawid Malan 58 (37), Alex Hales 38 (29)
Jake Ball 1-25, Matt Critchley 1-31

Welsh Fire: 143-6 (100 balls)

Matt Critchley 55* (35), Ben Duckett 25 (21)
