Prabath Jayasuriya tumbles records on his historic debut against Australia

Sri Lanka registered a convincing victory against Australia in the second Test to level the series. After taking a 190 runs lead in the first innings, Sri Lanka dismissed the whole team for Australia for just 151 runs. As a result, they won the match by an innings and 39 runs.

The standout performer for the hosts was their debutant left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya. He picked up 12 wickets, conceding 177 runs in the match. Jayasuriya’s remarkable debut has seen many records being tumbled down.

Let us take a look at the records Jayasuriya broke on his debut.

1. Best figures by a Sri Lankan bowler on debut: Jayasuriya’s figure of 12 for 177 is now the best among the Sri Lankan bowlers in debut Test. Praveen Jayawickrama previously held the record.

Jayawickrama, in his debut in 2021, picked up 11 wickets for 178 runs against Bangladesh.

2. Best figures by left-arm spin bowler on debut match: Jayasuriya’s match figures are now the best among left-arm spinners of the world on debut match in the history of Test cricket.

Coincidentally, in this case, the previous best was Jayawickrama’s performance against Bangladesh in 2021. The third name on the list is Alfred Valentine of the West Indies. He picked up 11 wickets for 204 runs in his debut match in 1950.

3. Second-best figures by a spin-bowler in debut match: Jayasuriya now has the second-best bowling figures for a spinner in the history of Test cricket.

Narender Hirwani of India tops the list. He picked up 16 wickets for 136 runs in his debut against West Indies in 1988.

4. Third-best figure by a bowler in debut Test: Jayasuriya’s 12 for 177 is now the third-best figure for a bowler in a debut Test.

The list topper is once again Hirwani’s 16 for 136 runs against West Indies in 1988. The second man on the list is Robert Massie. Alike Hirwani, Massie also picked up 16 wickets in his debut Test. But he has to be content with the second spot because he conceded just 1 run more than Hirwani. Massie picked up 16 wickets, giving away 137 runs.
