IPL 2020 | RCB vs MI: 'What experts said' as Navdeep Saini’s brilliant super over overshadows Ishan Kishan’s terrific batting
28 Sep 2020
Another wicket-keeper batsman with long hair, hailing from Jharkhand came into limelight with his brilliant sixes and fast run-scoring abilities. Only this time, he was lefty and had a lot of grace and style about his shots rather than being agricultural.
Ishan Kishan combined with Kieron Pollard to bring Mumbai Indians back into the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, from a position of almost no-comeback. The duo dealt in boundaries only in the last four overs of their innings. However, Kishan could not see the team through and got out on 99 with the Mumbai team still requiring five runs from one ball. Pollard hit a four and took the game in the Super Over.
But in the Super Over, the tables turned as Navdeep Saini bowled a brilliant over to restrict power hitters like Pollard and Hardik Pandya for just 7 runs. Mumbai gave a fight with 7 runs as well, but it was too late with too much left to do, as RCB clinched the game in Dubai.
The game produced a lot of brilliant efforts, while also being witness to pathetic batting by the two captains as well. All this and much more would find its place in the ‘Hits and Flops’ of the game.
Not many would have thought before the game that it would be Navdeep Saini who would bowl the Super Over and bowl it better than the maestro Jasprit Bumrah. That’s exactly what happened. But, even apart from that brilliant seven-run over, Saini had laid the foundation of an RCB victory when he gave away just 11 runs in the 19th over when 31 was required of 12 balls. Although in his four overs, the figures are a bit battered with 1/43, it is actually the last two over including the Super Over that made him the match-winner.
Making a comeback in the team, after remaining out from the playing eleven for the first two games due to injury, Ishan Kishan showed the class that he is made up of. Just as one after another wickets kept on falling, he continued to steer the ship along steadily, till the time Kieron Pollard started smashing the white ball out of the park. Kishan made 99 runs off 58 balls which included two boundaries and nine sixes. His partnership worth 119 runs with Pollard is something that brought the Mumbai team into the contention.
If Virat doesn’t get you, don’t rejoice because AB will. The South African more than just made up for the RCB captain’s early wicket. The veteran scored 55 of runs of just 24 balls giving the run rate a real jolt to take the Challengers to a total of beyond 200. He along with Shivam Dube added 47 runs off the last 17 deliveries of the game. For this effort of his and the wicket-keeping, he was awarded the Man Of the Match award.
The Indian captain’s woes with fast bowling continued as neither was he able to play his shots not rotate the strike, finally getting out on 3 of 11 deliveries. Although Kohli did score a boundary, that was when the victory was already in his plate in the Super Over. His failure continued in the league for third straight innings, causing Kohli to now look at it as a sign of worry.
Another name into the list of Flops, probably for the last time is that of Rohit Sharma, The Mumbai captain wasn’t able to execute his plans as he got out for just 8 runs while chasing a huge target of more than 200. His captaincy also looked all over the place today and thus him making it to the list should be no surprise
