India are facing a challenging day in the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground. After opting to bat first, India found themselves under pressure as Australia’s bowlers dominated early.
Mitchell Starc set the tone for Australia by dismissing KL Rahul for just 4 runs. Things quickly worsened for India as Yashasvi Jaiswal became Scott Boland's first victim of the day. Boland was in exceptional form, continuing to trouble the Indian batsmen.
Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli’s Brief Resistance vs AUS
Shubman Gill, along with Virat Kohli, attempted to steady the innings. However, just before lunch, Gill was dismissed for 20 runs off 64 balls. Kohli, who looked promising, was dismissed by Boland for 17 runs, caught by Beau Webster at third slip after playing a back-of-a-length delivery on the back foot.
Next in, Rishabh Pant, along with Ravindra Jadeja, tried to rebuild the innings. However, Boland continued his brilliance, removing Pant for 39 runs after a hard-fought 98-ball knock. Pant mistimed a pull shot, and the ball was caught by Pat Cummins at mid-on. The partnership was broken, and India’s hopes of a recovery seemed distant.
Boland was on fire, and his brilliance wasn’t over. In the 57th over, he took the key wicket of debutant Nitish Reddy, who was dismissed for a golden duck. On the fifth delivery of the over, Boland bowled a back-of-a-length delivery outside off stump, which angled in and nipped away. Reddy, caught in two minds, tried to leave the ball but failed to get his bat out of the line, leading to an easy catch for Steve Smith at second slip.
India In Deep Trouble Against Australia
Nitish Reddy, who had been in phenomenal form throughout his debut series, was dismissed cheaply despite playing crucial knocks earlier, including a century in the previous Test at Melbourne.
As of the latest update, India are struggling at 125 for 6 after 61 overs, with Australia firmly in control.
