Rajasthan Royals crashed KKR’s run-fest at the Eden Gardens with a thrilling last-ball win in match number 31 of the IPL 2024 season.

In pursuit of an improbable 224-run target, opener Jos Buttler punched out an imperial run-chase century and formed notable batting alliances with Riyan Parag in the middle overs and with Rovman Powell at the death.

The outcome ensured that Rajasthan Royals retained their number one position on the IPL 2024 points table, thus widening the gap with the number two placed KKR.

After the match, winning skipper Sanju Samson hailed Buttler and Powell for pulling off a near-unthinkable chase, and even rated the opener’s knock as one of the best in the business.

Chasing 224 for a win, Rajasthan Royals slipped to 121-6 at one stage before opener Jos Buttler and Rovman Powell shared 57 runs off the subsequent four-and-a-half overs. Powell himself pounded a boundary and three sixes in a sizzling 26-run cameo from 13 balls.

Captain Sanju Samson hailed Powell’s six-hitting blitz, especially after team’s top-order setbacks and also acknowledged Jos Buttler’s consistent run with the franchise over the last six to seven seasons. He said:

“Absolutely, we are really happy with the win. We were wondering about the wickets we lost. With the quality of the spinners they had, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, on a surface that suited them the most, we were looking at where those couple of sixes would come from. Rovman Powell got us that. Then Jos Buttler did what he does well all the time, what he has been doing for us for a long time. Jos did what he has done for us in the last 6-7 years, so I'm so happy for him.”

Sanju Samson further exclaimed that Jos Buttler’s run-chase masterclass belongs “right on top”, and claimed that no target is “unchaseable” when the Englishman is in his zone.

“Buttler’s knock should go right on top. Being an opener, if he gets in, no runs are unchaseable. He does something special almost every time he turns up for us.”

Sanju Samson will now lead Jos Buttler, Rovman Powell and the rest of his Rajasthan Royals colleagues in match number 38 of the IPL 2024 season against Mumbai Indians.

The much-awaited contest will be staged at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium on April 22.
