Australia wrapped up the opening Test match against Pakistan at the Perth Stadium on Day 4 to go 1-0 up in their three-match series.

Marsh helps AUS set 450-run target after lunch

Resuming at 84-2, Australia batted until few overs after lunch to set a monumental 450-run target for the visitors. Usman Khawaja notched up the 25th half-century of his career, while fellow overnight batter Steve Smith kept the scoreboard ticking with his 45.

Smith became the first Australian casualty of the day after he was trapped in front by Pakistani debutant Khurram Shahzad, who finished the innings with figures of 3-45. Fellow first Test cap-holder Aamer Jamal removed Travis Head a while later, before Mitchell Marsh orchestrated Australia’s run-scoring charge with a near run-a-ball 63*.

Marsh added 126 runs for the fifth wicket with Khawaja in just 20 overs to take Australia to 233-5, before captain Cummins called for declaration.

Starc wrecks top-order; Hazlewood, Lyon demolish tail

Australian pace thunderbolt Mitchell Starc removed both Pakistani openers within his opening spell, and came back to account for Sarfaraz Ahmed in one of his return spells to finish his day’s work with figures of 3-31 from nine overs.

Skipper Pat Cummins trapped dangerman Babar Azam cheaply while his pace mate Josh Hazlewood dismissed Pakistan captain Shan Masood for just two. The ‘Men in Green’, chasing an improbable 450, lost its first six wickets for just 63 on the board by the end of 21 overs.

Leading Australian spinner Nathan Lyon ensnared tailenders Faheem Ashraf and Aamer Jamal in quick succession to complete 500 Test wickets before Hazlewood’s finishing burst folded up Pakistan for just 89 in 30.2 overs.

Australia ended up sealing the Test by 360 runs to go 1-0 up in their three-match series. The two teams will now travel to Melbourne for their ‘Boxing Day’ affair, set to commence from December 26 onwards at the MCG.
