Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has been appointed as the new head coach of the Pakistan cricket team. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the same on April 8, i.e., roughly 10 days prior to Pakistan’s five-match T20I home series against New Zealand.

Azhar Mahmood recently served Islamabad United as bowling coach during their triumphant PSL 2024 run in Pakistan.

The PCB selection committee announced Pakistan’s entire support staff personnel ahead of their upcoming T20I series against New Zealand.

In a major announcement, former all-rounder and active Islamabad United bowling coach Azhar Mahmood was appointed as the new head coach of the Pakistan cricket team

The 49-year-old will be assisted by team manager Wahab Riaz, new batting coach Mohammad Yousuf and spin bowling coach Saeed Ajmal.

Azhar Mahmood was previously associated with the Pakistan cricket team as their bowling coach between the years 2016 and 2019.

During his playing days, the Rawalpindi-born cricketer featured in 143 ODIs and 21 Test matches for his country, tallying 2,421 runs and 162 wickets across both formats.

Meanwhile, the PCB selection committee also confirmed that they will be unveiling Pakistan’s entire squad for the T20I series against New Zealand the following day on April 9.

The selection committee recently caught up with several Pakistan cricketers to discuss policies involving team selection and rotation in order to create fresh opportunities for the youngsters.

Pakistan players themselves took part in a physical training camp in Kakul until earlier this week in lieu of their upcoming T20 international season, which features five home matches against New Zealand and away series against Ireland and England.

Pakistan’s impending international fixtures serves as their final set of matches prior to this year’s T20 World Cup 2024 in June.
